Our principles

Six principles behind the Roomster community

Great matches start with trust. These principles guide how members create profiles, post listings, and talk to one another on the Roomster roommate finder.

Be yourself

Use your own name and a photo of yourself, and complete free ID validation so the people you talk to know you are a trusted member of the Roomster community.

List clearly

Describe your room, rent, deposit, location, and house rules accurately. Clear listings help renters and hosts find the right match faster and build lasting trust.

Treat people with respect

Communicate with courtesy. Everyone searching for a room, roommate, or shared home deserves respectful, judgment-free conversations from first message to move-in.

Uphold fair housing

Welcome members of every background. Roomster supports fair housing and equal opportunity, and does not tolerate discrimination that violates fair housing laws.

Keep it on-platform

Keep your first conversations inside Roomster secure messaging. It protects your privacy and lets our team screen for anything that puts members at risk.

Protect the community

If something looks wrong, report it. A single report from a member helps our integrity team protect thousands of other renters and hosts across the community.

The standards

The standards that protect every member

These are the commitments we hold every profile, listing, and conversation to across rooms for rent, apartments, and roommate matching.

01

Trusted, ID-checked members

Every member is invited to complete free ID validation and free proof-of-address checks, so the community is built on trusted, accountable people, not anonymous accounts.

02

Accurate listings and pricing

Listings must reflect the actual room, rent, deposit, and location. Misleading photos, fake pricing, or bait listings are not allowed and are removed when found.

03

Respectful communication

Conversations stay respectful. Harassment, hate speech, threats, and bullying have no place on Roomster and lead to account action.

04

Fair housing and inclusion

Members treat one another equally. Roomster stands behind fair housing and rejects discrimination based on protected characteristics.

05

Scam-free and spam-free

No scams, no spam. Requests to wire money, move payments off-platform, or send a deposit before an in-person or live video tour are prohibited and monitored around the clock.

06

Firsthand member reviews

Reviews come from active members sharing firsthand experiences, giving the whole community reliable signals about hosts, renters, and homes.

Not allowed

What is not allowed on Roomster

To keep the community safe, the following behavior is prohibited and can lead to content removal or account action.

  • Fake, misleading, or impersonated profiles, and any attempt to hide your actual identity.
  • Listings that misrepresent the room, rent, deposit, availability, photos, or location.
  • Discrimination that violates fair housing laws or targets protected groups.
  • Harassment, hate speech, threats, intimidation, or bullying of any member.
  • Requests to move a conversation or payment off Roomster before meeting in person.
  • Requests for deposits, wire transfers, gift cards, or crypto before an in-person or live video tour.
  • Spam, repetitive solicitation, or unsolicited commercial messaging.
  • Any illegal activity, or content that endangers the safety of other members.

How we enforce

How Roomster keeps standards high

Around-the-clock message screening

Human moderators review member reports and message activity 24/7, so risky behavior is caught quickly rather than left to spread.

Dedicated integrity team

A dedicated integrity and scam-prevention team investigates patterns, shuts down bad actors, and continually strengthens our defenses.

Free ID validation

Free ID validation and free proof-of-address checks raise the bar for accountability and keep anonymous, throwaway accounts out.

Easy in-app reporting

Members can report a profile, listing, or message in a tap, and reports feed directly into our review and enforcement process.

When a rule is broken

What happens next

  • A warning and guidance to bring an account back into line with our standards.
  • Removal of listings, photos, or messages that break the rules.
  • Blocking of messages and features for accounts that put members at risk.
  • Suspension or permanent removal of accounts for serious or repeated violations.
  • Cooperation with law enforcement where the law requires it.

Actions scale with the seriousness of the violation, and repeated breaches lead to permanent removal from Roomster.
