Redondo Beach has almost no large apartment complexes by Los Angeles standards. The city built out as single-family tracts and then filled in with two-on-a-lot townhomes and small four- to eight-unit buildings, so the rental market is a scatter of individually owned units rather than a handful of leasing offices, and listings surface one at a time. Roomster shows 63 apartments for rent across the city, from the Golden Hills and El Nido blocks in the north to the numbered streets and Riviera Village in the south. Because so much of the stock is owner-held, responsiveness varies wildly, and applying quickly counts for more here than it would at a managed property.
The citywide average sits near $3,275 and rose about 5 percent over the past year, which makes Redondo Beach one of the more expensive rental markets in the country. Studios generally start around $2,200, one-bedrooms cluster between $2,400 and $2,650, and two-bedrooms run roughly $3,200 to $3,450. You can find one-bedrooms under $2,300 a month in El Nido, Golden Hills and the TRW tract in North Redondo, where you trade the walk to the sand for a five-minute drive. The premium concentrates in the blocks west of Pacific Coast Highway and around the Esplanade, where an ocean view can add a four-figure sum to the same floor plan.
There is no local rent control ordinance. Redondo Beach has never adopted one, so there is no rent board, no registration requirement and no city rent-dispute program, and the only cap available is the state Tenant Protection Act, which limits annual increases to 5 percent plus regional inflation with a hard ceiling of 10 percent and requires just cause to end a tenancy after twelve months. The catch in this city is coverage rather than the number: state law exempts single-family homes and condominiums when the landlord gives written notice, along with anything built in the last fifteen years and owner-occupied duplexes. Since so much of Redondo's rental stock is exactly that, condos, townhomes and houses, a great many local tenancies fall outside the cap entirely. Ask which category your unit is in before you sign.
North Redondo is the practical answer to both. The Metro K Line's Redondo Beach (Marine) station at 5301 Marine Avenue sits on the Hawthorne border, and Metro certified the environmental report in January 2026 for a 4.5-mile extension south to the Torrance Transit Center, with construction possible from 2027. For drivers, apartments near Aviation Boulevard, Inglewood Avenue and Marine reach the El Segundo aerospace corridor and LAX without touching the 405, which is the difference between fifteen minutes and fifty. In South Redondo the commute is Pacific Coast Highway and Catalina, slower at rush hour, and the reason people accept it is that they can walk to the water.
California has capped most security deposits at one month's rent since July 2024, furnished or not, with a limited exception for small landlords who own no more than two residential properties totaling four units. That exception is worth knowing here, because so many Redondo rentals are owned by individuals rather than companies. Application screening fees are capped at $65.86 per applicant in 2026, and under rules in force since January 2025 the landlord must give you the written screening criteria before taking the fee, provide a copy of any credit report pulled, and issue an adverse action notice if you are declined. Tenant-paid broker fees are not a thing in the South Bay; if one is requested, walk.
Redondo sits in the middle of its neighbors and offers the most stock. Hermosa Beach to the north is smaller, denser and generally pricier per square foot, with very little inventory at any given moment. Torrance to the east and south is meaningfully cheaper and has the large managed complexes Redondo lacks, but you lose the walk to the beach and gain a longer drive to the El Segundo corridor. Within Redondo itself the spread between North and South is wide enough that the comparison often resolves internally: North Redondo prices closer to Torrance, South Redondo closer to Hermosa, and choosing between them is really a choice about how often you actually go to the water.
